RJ4All is delighted to announce the formal opening ceremony of our 4th International Symposium on Restorative Justice on 16th June, 2025, which will be held at the University of Central Lancashire, Cyprus (UCLan Cyprus).
Our current world needs appeasement and reconciliation. Conflicts around the world, such as those in Ukraine, Gaza, Syria, and Afghanistan, continue to claim the lives of thousands of victims, including children and women (Ayobi et al., 2020; Wardak & Braithwaite, 2020). Additionally, the ferocity and sophistication of cyberattacks around the world, and the widespread usage of Artificial Intelligence (CrowdStrike, 2024), create feelings of insecurity independently of where we live. Cyprus, our host country for this Symposium, is not spared from these issues, as it is the last and only divided capital in the European Union. The inter-community conflict since 1963, the Cypriot coup d’état and the subsequent Turkish invasion in 1974 left scars on the country, impacting the lives of generations of Cypriots.
Considering this, we decided to revive our successful tradition of hosting the International Symposia on Restorative Justice and have selected the picturesque island of Cyprus as our destination. The Symposium is established to bring together around 20 world-leading experts from around the world, including South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and the US, along with their families and friends, to spend the week in Cyprus and explore the theme of “Inter-community and inter-state conflicts: peacebuilding and reconciliation” through daily discussions, debates, and visits across your country.
We are excited to begin the week with an Opening Ceremony that is open to all. This inclusive gathering invites anyone interested to join us in setting the stage for the Symposium, engaging in the first round of discussions, and reflecting together on this year’s theme: “Inter-community and inter-state conflicts: Peacebuilding and Reconciliation.” It is an opportunity for the wider community to take part in launching a collective journey of learning, dialogue, and reflection.
Highlights of this ceremony will include two keynotes by Prof. Theo Gavrielides and Prof. John Braithwaite, a welcome speech by a representative of the Ministry of Education, as well as a panel discussion on our Symposium featuring international experts in restorative justice, peacemaking, truth and reconciliation, including members of the Organising Committee.

Το RJ4All Europe ανακοινώνει με περηφάνεια την έναρξη του 4ου Ετήσιου Διεθνούς Συνεδρίου του στην Κύπρο, με στόχο την πρόληψη και την αντιμετώπιση της ρητορικής μίσους μέσω της αποκαταστατικής δικαιοσύνης. Η εκδήλωση υποστηρίζεται από την περιφέρεια της Απούλιας Regione Puglia στην Ιταλία και θα πραγματοποιηθεί σε συνεργασία με το Μεταπτυχιακό πρόγραμμα στην Εγκληματολογική Ψυχολογία του Πανεπιστημίου UCLan Cyprus. Πρόσφατες μελέτες έχουν δείξει μια ανησυχητική αύξηση της ρητορικής μίσους σε όλη την Κύπρο και την Ευρώπη, που τροφοδοτούνται από παραπληροφόρηση, ψηφιακό αναλφαβητισμό και ρητορική μίσους στο διαδίκτυο (Gavrielides, 2021). Αυτή η τάση έχει προκαλέσει επείγουσες εκκλήσεις για καινοτόμες λύσεις που θα προάγουν τον διάλογο και την κατανόηση, ιδιαίτερα μεταξύ των Ελληνοκυπριακών και Τουρκοκυπριακών κοινοτήτων.
“Σε μια εποχή όπου η ρητορική μίσους και η παραπληροφόρηση αυξάνονται, το συνέδριό μας αντιπροσωπεύει ένα κρίσιμο βήμα προς την προώθηση της ειρήνης και της κατανόησης. Λαμβάνοντας υπόψη αυτό το ζήτημα, το 4ο Ετήσιο Διεθνές Συνέδριο θα πραγματοποιηθεί στις 14 Οκτωβρίου 2024, φέρνοντας κοντά ειδικούς επαγγελματίες, υπεύθυνους χάραξης πολιτικής και μέλη της κοινότητας, με επίκεντρο τις συζητήσεις για τα εξής βασικά σημεία:
● Αντιμετώπιση επειγόντων ζητημάτων παραπληροφόρησης, ψηφιακού αναλφαβητισμού και ρητορικής μίσους στο διαδίκτυο μέσω προσεγγίσεων αποκαταστατικής δικαιοσύνης, ιδιαίτερα στις Ελληνοκυπριακές και Τουρκοκυπριακές κοινότητες.
● Ανάπτυξη δεξιοτήτων και γνώσεων που υποστηρίζουν τον ειρηνικό διάλογο και τη διαπολιτισμική κατανόηση.
● Προώθηση του διαπολιτισμικού διαλόγου και μη βίαιης επικοινωνίας σε ολόκληρη την περιοχή της Μεσογείου.
● Ενδυνάμωση των συμμετεχόντων ώστε να διαδραματίσουν καθοριστικό ρόλο στην προώθηση της αποκαταστατικής δικαιοσύνης και της ειρήνης.
Κύρια σημεία του συνεδρίου περιλαμβάνουν ομιλίες από τον Καθηγητή Θήο Γαβριηλίδη και τη Δρ. Λίλια Ψαλτά, μια συζήτηση πάνελ με κορυφαίους ειδικούς στην αποκαταστατική δικαιοσύνη, την διαμεσολάβηση, την αλήθεια και τη συμφιλίωση, καθώς και διαδραστικά εργαστήρια σχετικά με τη μη βίαιη επικοινωνία, τον ψηφιακό αλφαβητισμό στα μέσα και τις πρακτικές της αποκαταστατικής δικαιοσύνης. Η εκδήλωση θα προσφέρει ευκαιρίες δικτύωσης, συμμετοχής και μια ψηφιακή έκθεση που θα παρουσιάζει τον αντίκτυπο του συνεδρίου.

Σε απάντηση στα αυξανόμενα ζητήματα εγκλημάτων και ρητορικής μίσους, το RJ4All Europe, υπό τον συντονισμό της ιταλικής ΜΚΟ Sinergia Società Cooperativa Sociale και με χρηματοδότηση από την Περιφέρεια της Απουλίας (Regione Puglia), έχει ξεκινήσει το έργο “Gentle Speech”. Αυτή η πρωτοβουλία στοχεύει στην προώθηση των πρακτικών της αποκαταστατικής δικαιοσύνης για την καταπολέμηση της ρητορικής μίσους και της παραπληροφόρησης σε ολόκληρη τη Μεσόγειο.
Στο πλαίσιο αυτού του έργου, το 4ο Ετήσιο Διεθνές Συνέδριο του RJ4All θα προσφέρει ένα πλούσιο πρόγραμμα επικεντρωμένο στην αντιμετώπιση της ρητορικής μίσους και των διχαστικών λόγων μέσω της αποκαταστατικής δικαιοσύνης.

RJ4All Europe is proud to announce the launch of its 4th Annual International Conference in Cyprus to prevent and address divisive narratives through restorative justice. The event is supported by the Italian Ministry Regione Puglia and will be held in collaboration with the MSc in Forensic Psychology at University of Central Lancashire, Cyprus (UCLan Cyprus). The conference will also signify the launch of RJ4All Europe’s new partnerships with UCLan Cyprus; Hands across the Divide; Truth Now aiming to strengthen the impact of restorative justice in Cyprus and the EU.
This year’s conference will spotlight the “Gentle Speech” project, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at combating hate speech and divisive narratives through restorative justice.

Recent studies have shown a concerning rise in divisive narratives across Cyprus and Europe, fuelled by misinformation, digital illiteracy, and online hate speech (Gavrielides, 2021). This trend has sparked urgent calls for innovative solutions to foster dialogue and understanding, particularly between Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities.

By leveraging restorative justice principles, we aim to create spaces for dialogue and healing, particularly in communities affected by long-standing conflicts.”
In light of this issue, the 4th Annual International Conference will take place on October 14th, 2024, bringing together experts, policymakers, and community members and focusing on the discussions on these key points:
● Address pressing issues of misinformation, digital illiteracy, and online hate speech through restorative justice approaches, particularly within the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities.
● Build skills and knowledge that support peaceful dialogue and intercultural understanding.
● Foster intercultural dialogue and promote non-violent communication across the Mediterranean region.
● Empower participants to play a pivotal role in advancing restorative justice and peace.
Highlights include keynotes by Prof. Theo Gavrielides and Dr. Lilia Psalta, a panel discussion featuring leading experts on restorative justice, peace-making, truth and reconciliation, and interactive workshops on non-violent communication, digital media literacy, and restorative justice circles. The event will provide opportunities for networking, engagement, and a digital exhibition showcasing the conference’s impact and insights.

Gentle Speech Project
In response to the growing issues of hate crime and divisive narratives, RJ4All Europe, under the coordination of the Italian NGO Sinergia Società Cooperativa Sociale and funded by Regione Puglia, has launched the “Gentle Speech” project. This initiative aims to advance restorative justice practices to combat hate speech and misinformation across the Mediterranean Basin.
Within this project, the 4th RJ4All Annual International Conference will offer a rich programme focused on addressing hate and divisive language through restorative justice.
